Day 2: Van Horn to Ft Davis State Park: 58 miles, 2100 vertical ft.
The day started innocently enough: 30 miles of flat frontage road and smooth wide shoulders of I-10 from Van Horn to Kent. We sailed along this section with spinnakers bulging with a strong tailwind.

Looking east over I-10 towards Kent
But then we turned south, and thereÕs only one word to describe it: wind. Specifically, a 45 mph crosswind battering riders as we rode uphill from creosote flats into oak groves of the Davis Mountains near MacDonald Observatory.

Pat, Stu, Jane, Bill, Charlotte, & Alan looking grim at lunch in the wind.
ThereÕs always a bright side though: great sag drivers ready to pick up riders and the Indian Lodge in Ft Davis State Park at the end of the day.
